Option 2 (Private Aircraft or Charter Plane)For all intent and purpose this should be option #1, since it is surely the most comfortable and fastest method of transportation to Xcalak. Considering the simple fact however, that most of us travel on a budget which does not include flying to Xcalak, we have relegated this mode of transportation to place #2. Xcalak does in fact have a well-maintained 4000 ft. air strip, some two kilometers west of town, allowing just about any size private aircraft to land and take off safely. We have heard frequent rumors in the past year that regularly scheduled flights would begin serving Xcalak but at the present time this option remains a rumor. Option 3, 4, 5 (Boat, Bus, Taxi)Consider flying to San Pedro, Belize, where one of our local guides will pick you up and take you by way of a 25 ft. boat to Xcalak. This mode of travel to your destination is convenient, fun and will take no more than an hour and a half.Arrangements to be picked up by boat in San Pedro can be made by the resort where you are planning to stay. To get to Xcalak by bus is not exactly the easiest way since it is time consuming and can be a test of your mental fortitude and patience. At the Cancun bus station you take an ADO first class bus to Carillo Puerto. From there a regular bus headed for Limones. You must not arrive in Limones after three in the afternoon or else you will miss the connection to Xcalak, which originates in Chetumal. Another possibility is to take a first class coach directly to Chetumal, stay there for the night, and catch the 6 am bus to Xcalak. To hire a taxi in Cancun, Playa del Carmen or Carillo Puerto is a good idea if you bargain well with a cabdriver who happens to be interested in getting to know the southern part of Quintana Roo. You will get the best results at the Cancun Bus station, certainly not however at the Airport. A few words about money |
